Subhapruek Golf Club

18 Holes | Par 72 | Pete Dye | Opened 1993

About the course

Subhapruek means beautiful plants and, despite its location, it’s one of the most scenic courses in the area. There are plenty of lakes, well maintained bunkers, lots of flowers and a wide variety of trees, invariably in immaculate condition, which – given how busy the course can be at weekends – is a major achievement.

The par 3's are all good and with two very difficult par 4's to finish each nine, Subhapruek is a good test of golf from any of the tee boxes, as well as being pleasant and picturesque. There are actually 19 holes, but although it’s a testing par 3 in its own right, the 19th is really there for a fun end to the round.

Playing the course: Member tees

The 8th 435 yards par 5 is quite short off the members tee, but at 501 yards off the yellows it’s a different prospect altogether! From a raised tee box with water and a long waste bunker down the right and trees left, it's quite a big carry to the fairway. From the members tee, the hole is short enough to give you a chance of getting on in two shots, but with the green offset to the right out into the lake, only a well controlled cut shot will do it. The 16th 107 yards par 3 can either be a huge disappointment or an easy par; it all depends on the tee shot. Surrounded by water and also fringed by rocks, this is quite a daunting hole for anyone not confident with their short iron play. One individual recreated the scene from the film ‘Tin Cup’, where Kevin Costner empties the bag of golf balls trying to clear a water hazard with a 3 wood, only at this hole it was with a sand wedge!

The 18th 385 yards par 4 is a tough finishing hole at the best of times and one to be treated with the greatest of respect, even though 385 yards is not considered very long.

At 419 yards off the yellow tees, and often into the wind, it’s still a long second to a green that angles away left towards the water and has a well placed bunker short left. If the pin is tucked away on the back left portion of the green it's best to aim for the centre and let the natural slope of the green feed the ball down towards the hole.

The clubhouse is smaller than many, but is both adequate and functional. The restaurant has an excellent range of Thai, International and Japanese dishes as well as a reasonable wine list and well stocked bar. A large TV screen in the corner shows sport broadcasts and a message board in the lobby shows your tee time with a red, amber green system to get you on the course at the right time.
