Thai Country Club

18 Holes | Par 72 | By Denis Griffiths | Opened 1996

About the course

Service and hospitality are very much to the fore, from the moment the players walk through the door to the time they depart. As with most courses on the central plain, hills and relief are not its strong point, but the builders have done very well with earth moving to create few completely flat holes and many with sloped lies.

Not many courses in Thailand will be in as good a condition; its manicured fairways are better than most lawns and the maturing palm trees and flower beds make this a beautiful walk.

Playing the course: Member tees

The 2nd 362 yards par 4 is an interesting hole, it’s a sharp dog-leg right over water with a massive bunker slap bang on the line you’d normally want to take, thus forcing a drive left and, further from the hole, with the second shot to a slightly elevated green. The big hitter might take a line right of the bunker, but this will mean taking on more of the water. The 2nd 362 yards par 4

The 3rd 180 yards par 3 can be very challenging depending on the wind, which is usually quite strong in the afternoons since the course is not far from the Gulf of Thailand. Its 205 yards into the wind off the tournament tee and one Asian tour pro was overheard discussing club selection with his caddie. “Strong 6 iron,” he said. Mere mortals would be looking at a wood from that distance and even 180 yards is probably a 3 or 4 iron for most. The pro put it to 15 feet pin high!

The 3rd 180 yards par 3
The 15th 389 yards par 4 is a blind drive to a landing area that slopes left to right. A bunker on the left almost forces the drive to go right, but with water in front of the tee on the right and little clear sight of the landing area this is not an easy tee shot for the psychologically damaged. The approach to the green is almost a peninsula sticking out into the lake. There’s very little bail-out area, so go straight at the green and trust yourself. Of course, the green adds to the fun by sloping towards the water so expect a fast putt if you’re above the hole. The 15th 389 yards par 4

The 19th hole

The clubhouse is a large two story edifice with all that you’d expect of a 5-star facility. The experience starts in the locker rooms where, if you’re a guest, your name will already be on the locker before the attendant guides you to it. A sauna and massage after the game can be your reward for a good day’s golf, or just relax in the restaurant looking over the lake that separates the 1st and the 18th holes. The food is of a high standard, as is the service. What’s nice to see is the way the staff in all corners of the club, seem to know the regular members and take the time to look after them royally.
