The Royal Golf & Country Club

18 Holes | Par 72 | By Chohei Miyasawa | Opened 1993

About the course

Despite the lack of relief, The Royal Golf and Country Club is still a good test of golf and, off the blue tees, is really quite tricky. The easily found course is only 15 minutes from Suvarnabhumi International Airport and is effectively laid out inside a lake with water forming a boundary round the perimeter which, although visible, is not always in play.

During the week, the flags are placed in some very challenging places on the large greens with the distance from the centres to some of the back pins being as much as 25 yards − a full club difference. Just getting on the green is no certainty for par and anyone who walks off this course without a 3 putt has had a good day!

Playing the course: White tees

The 5th 482 yards par 5, whilst not overly long, can create trouble if the drive is not top quality. The tee box sets up over a big lake that runs down the length of the hole and, although the carry is only about 180 yards, anything pulled means a reload.

A straight shot will usually land the bigger hitters in trees on the right side, so aim over the lake for the middle palm with a draw − and you should be in a good position. The green is a two tier kidney shape and, with a back pin, is a difficult approach. A strong second shot with a wedge is best for avoiding the wrong tier.

The 9th 362 yards par 4 has water on the right for the first 170 yards and then left for the rest of the hole. The green is a massive affair, protected by bunkers to the back and the lake on the left. Beware once on the green as there are some subtle ridges in the putting surface so it’s easy to 3-putt if you’re too far away from the flag.

The 18th 358 yards par 4 can be a beast; it’s usually into prevailing wind and has water right and trees left, behind which is out of bounds. A big hit will get you into water trouble at about 230 yards, so unless you are very accurate, take a 3 wood off the tee.

The second shot throws up all sorts of challenges as the green is virtually surrounded by sand and a huge long green gives lots of choices of pin positions which, if at the back, is almost 20 yards from the centre, so that might be two clubs different if the wind is up.

The clubhouse is a huge structure which affords separate meeting and function rooms as well as a main restaurant. The usual choice of Thai and International dishes is available, but they also serve a good selection of Japanese food as this club is regularly frequented by Japanese expatriates and tourists. For a drink, try the fresh lime crush, or ‘naam manao bun’ in Thai; they serve one of the best found anywhere in the country.
