Alpine Golf Resort Chiangmai
18 Holes | Par 72 | by ron Garl | opened 2008
About the course
The Alpine organisation took over what was Chiangmai
Lampun Golf Club, transforming a good course into something
special. Using the same designer as their Bangkok course
and keeping the same philosophy, they've created a layout
to challenge the best; you'll need your ‘A’ game here. Almost
totally renovated, Alpine presents a championship length
design, with even the generous white tees a mere 6,814 yards,
and sports an excellent set of par 5s – one possibly the longest
in Thailand – as well as some difficult par 4s all set in a beautiful
valley between the surrounding forest clad mountains.
Playing the course: White tees
The 4th 614 yards par 5
has to be the longest par 5 in the country. The tee shot
is key; you need to avoid trees on both
sides and out of bounds on the left and a
fairway bunker lurks at the spot where many
a second shot lands, so a lay-up is often a
sensible alternative rather than trying
to take it on. The green is reasonably
defenceless simply because the hole relies
on its length to protect itself so 3 good shots
will see you making par or better. |
 |
The 7th 555 yards par 5 presents a serious
test for the less accurate player. Water runs all
the way along the hole, starting left before
crossing over the fairway to the right making
the player negotiate a landing area on both
the drive and the second shot. You can layup
and take a longer 3rd shot, but obviously
good scores come from brave play so don’t be
shy. It’s not obligatory but a 'wai' to the spirit
house near the tee to pay your respects will
help you along your way. |
 |
The 9th 427 yards par 4 is a difficult hole
by any standards; long in a
country with little run on
the fairways and into the wind normally,
you need a hefty drive over water down the
right side to an island landing area before
facing another longish shot over water to the
flag. Going left will leave you with a bunker
protecting the green as well as a longer shot.
This is index 1 on the card, so get serious with
this hole as it's capable of biting back. |

The 19th hole
A most beautiful club house caps off a memorable day out on
a championship golf course. There's a 78-room resort with all
the facilities one requires as well as the Heritage spa offering
a range of treatments to sooth the aches and pains of the
tired golfer. The resort restaurant provides all day dining with
indoor and outdoor seating and with a wide ranging menu,
there is no shortage of choice in food and wines. There is also
a swimming pool and poolside bar providing an alternative
and more informal place to relax and get refreshed.
