Mae Jo Golf Club and resort

18 Holes | Par 72 | by Seni thirawat | opened 2004

About the course

Mae Jo Golf Club is clearly a gem in the northern crown and although perhaps not as well known as some other courses in this region, it deserves a visit; many who have played this course speak very highly of it. Situated behind the university of the same name, it's closer to Chiang Mai town than many so is convenient – a mere 20 minutes from the airport and ideal for the first game on a tour of the north.

The course features countless fruit trees that line the fairways giving it a mature feel and, at several holes round the course, elevated tees afford beautiful views of Doi Suthep, the mountain that overlooks the city of Chiang Mai.

Located only a short distance from the heart of Chiang Mai City, Mae Jo features a modern Lanna-styled resort, which was opened in 2008, comprising of 51 rooms with a choice of superior or grand deluxe rooms and even suites. All accommodations have either course, lake or mountain views.

Mae Jo also boasts enough facilities to ensure that the whole family has a great time, there’s a swimming pool with pool-side bar, games and massage rooms which punctuate a central courtyard garden. For the energetic there’s lawn tennis court, with biking and kayaking for the more adventurous.

Playing the course: Yellow tees

The 5th 374 yards par 4 might give you a bit of tree trouble off the tee if straightness is not your strong point; the left side is heavily wooded and mango trees line the right side of the fairway.

A wayward or short drive will leave you with a lay-up as a large lake sits at the end of the fairway and effectively guards the green. It is only a short iron to get on but beware the bunker front right and any shot over the back; chipping back towards water is never much fun.

The 5th 374 yards par 4

The 9th 373 yards par 4 is one that will ask the golfer to make a decision as to how much to cut off the drive since it is a dog-leg right with water much of the way down the right side. Anything too ambitious will be a wet ball, but hit it straight and long and a short approach awaits you. Two bankers protect the green however, so any bail out is best left short, but unless the pin is back right, you should be able to get there safely and make the all important birdie or par.

The 9th 373 yards par 4

The 11th 312 yards par 4 might tempt the bigger hitters to cut the dog-leg left and go straight at the green.

However, a mistake on a short hole looks quite foolish if you get it wrong so a longish iron might be the answer to play for position before hitting a short iron to the green, avoiding bunkers either side of it. The green has a hump in the middle so check the pin position carefully before deciding where to place the ball.

Signature Hole

The 14th 164 yards par 3 is one of the best par 3s in the north. An elevated tree top drinks kiosk allows a great view over the hole to the mountains so take a look and get some inspiration before hitting a mid iron over the large waste area that runs all the way from the tee to the front of the green. A tiny bail out area should encourage a committed shot to the flag but beware a large bunker that protects the right side. In addition to the elevation drop, shifting winds on some days make club selection all important, but as with many par 3s, the trouble is short so being a little overzealous won’t do too much damage to the scorecard. The 19th hole

An attractive contemporary clubhouse, again in Lanna style, sits on a slight rise overlooking the course and provides a perfect setting for a relaxing drink or meal after the golf. No matter how long or short a stay, the staff take pride in ensuring that the duration is as comfortable and as enjoyable as possible.

The terraced restaurant has both indoor and al fresco dining and serves a comprehensive selection of dishes with northern style cuisine leading the specialities on offer here. Some of these might be a little on the spicy side for some palates but as with all Thai food, there will be a few dishes that delight the taste buds. The poolside-bar serves drinks, ice creams and a variety of snacks until the late hours.

The sun sets behind the mountain ranges around Doi Suthep providing a perfect back drop for a few refreshments on the terrace, by the pool, at the Green Side Lounge, or in the Courtyard Garden.
