Khao Kheow Country Club

27 Holes | Par 72 | By Pete Dye | Opened 1993

About the course

Khao Kheow is much better than some give it credit for and, design-wise, it’s a treat. Many golfers don’t favour it, supposedly as it’s not for the faint hearted! With much use of water, strategic bunkering and some very tight out of bounds stakes, this course is a thinking golfer’s paradise and, with three very different 9's to choose from, you may end up using all 14 clubs in the bag, although playing irons or fairway woods off the tee to safe and sensible spots in the fairway will pay dividends, particularly on some of the narrower par 4’s.

As the course is located half way between Bangkok and Pattaya it’s ideally located if heading to or from the eastern seaboard.

Playing the course: Yellow tees

The 3rd 184 yards par 3 on Course A can wreck the start of your round if you’re aquaphobic. A massive bunker stretches out ahead of the tee, but really isn’t in play unless you hit a complete topped shot. The challenge, however, is to hit a reasonably long iron to a small target with water all the way down the right guarding most of the green. The tee shot is often into the wind, accentuating any slice or cut which would be the natural shot for the fearful. Getting out of here with a regulation par, or any other par for that matter, is a pleasant feeling so early in the round. The 3rd 184 yards par 3
The 8th 459 yards par 5 on Course A looks like an invitation to make an eagle relatively easily given its short yardage, but this hole requires a precise drive. The raised tee looks out over a longish carry, and an angled stream with out of bounds left and right. If you can avoid all these hazards, plus a bunker placed right where a safe shot should go, the rest of the hole is not too difficult. However, everything slopes away right towards water and more sand traps, so either hit it big and have a go for the second shot or take a mid iron and put the ball in a safe position. The 8th 459 yards par 5
The 8th 128 yards par 3 on Course B is a true island green and given its length is either an easy par or birdie or an unbridled disaster. With a raised tee to a sharply downhill target, it’s probably one club less than the distance implies unless there is wind involved, so it really should be a simple wedge or 9 iron. The 19th hole

The clubhouse presents a challenge all of its own and that is climbing the massive staircase to get to the restaurant; not graciously received by those with tired legs after a hard day on the links. However, the climb leads to a spacious eatery with a 150-degree panoramic view over the finishing holes and the air-conditioning will be most welcome. The Thai and International menu is good too.
