Laem Chabang Country Club

27 Holes | Par 72 | By Pete Dye | Opened 1993

About the course

Laem Chabang is right up there amongst Thailand’s top courses, and is ranked 45th in Asia’s Top 50 Golf Courses.

There are three 9-hole courses, each different, but the waste bunkers and strategically placed water hazards clearly signify the unmistakable work of Jack Nicklaus. Like many of his designs, you’re expected to fashion shots rather than just smack the ball round the course. There are some stunning holes, both from an aesthetic viewpoint and in degree of difficulty. With Bermuda grass greens, putting will also be a challenge – the grain making them more subtle than many. Overall it’s a very playable course, with the right balance of difficulty and generosity.

Playing the course : Blue tees

The 1st 336 yards par 4 on the Mountain Course can be an intimidating place to start if you’re on this 9 for your first half. The first 190 yards of the drive is tree lined, with the fairway bending off to the right, requiring a slight fade on the ball, a bad slice leaving it in the trees or water. Two big bunkers on the right of the green guard it well and an accurate second shot is needed to get safely on. Short but tricky describes the introduction to the Mountain Course, earning it a stroke index of 3. The 1st 336 yards par 4
The 6th 428 yards par 4 on the Lake Course is the signature hole and is rightly stroke index 1. Even off the more generous white tees, it’s still 402 yards and, despite being downhill, is a big hit with the driver to give you the chance of a go at the green. The second shot is the real challenge as it requires clearing a lake to the green, angled away right, so a controlled cut is probably the answer, but over do it and you’ll get wet and be looking at a big score. The 6th 428 yards par 4
The 3rd 397 yards par 4 on the Valley Course is a beauty to behold and, whilst not overly long, is still stroke index 2. A slightly elevated tee box looks out to the fairway and over a small strip of water that feeds the lake all the way down the right of the hole and in front of the green. A Nicklaus-trademark waste bunker and some palms line the right of the fairway to catch an errant slice. The approach is to a small target over the lake with a bunker in front to trap anything short. The 3-storey clubhouse is suitably impressive and the service stands out as a norm rather than an exception. The ‘Rom Pho Restaurant’, serving Thai, Japanese and European cuisine, has scenic views overlooking the course and the rolling hills beyond. The ‘Sawasdee Lounge’, with its own patio, is a relaxing place to have a drink or a snack, while the ‘Sabai- Sabai Lounge’ for club members, even has a sports and piano bar. The club also has a 40-room Golf Lodge offering deluxe or junior suites at reasonable prices and a swimming pool for a cooling dip.
