About the course

This is one of Thailand’s top golf courses and is a must for serious golfers; it always ranks in the top 5 in the country. The European Tour has selected it twice to hold the Johnnie Walker Classic; Tiger Woods and Miguel Angel Jimenez being the winners. The condition of the course is usually pristine as it’s well maintained and is not overplayed. With lots of trees, water and sand, the layout is pleasing to the eye as well as a tough test of golf. Tight fairways and punitive rough are the norm.

It is however, a private members club, so getting an introduction by a member or joining an organised tour will be required. However, the welcome you receive from the moment you pull up at the bag drop is outstanding.

Playing the course: Blue tees

The 6th 210 yards par 3 captures the attention as it’s a long hit probably with a wood or utility club for most players, although from an elevated tee box, the hole does not play its full length. Water lurks all along the right side and even cuts in just short of the massive kidney-shaped green. A large bunker covers the right half of the green which is off set to the right and with more sand traps behind, it’s an intimidating shot. There are significant slopes and borrows on a tiered putting surface to add bite. The 6th 210 yards par 3
The 12th 173 yards par 3 is possibly the most interesting hole. From the tee box the hole dips down briefly before rising back up to the green, which is roughly the same elevation as the start point. A big waste bunker edged by water covers the right side and runs up to the edge of the green, creating a deep trap in some parts. A large clover-leaf shaped green with a ridge in the middle of it affords the green keeper plenty of opportunity to cause havoc. The 12th 173 yards par 3
The 18th 365 yards par 4 is a good grandstand finishing hole for tournament golf. The drive is relatively straightforward although with the rough at its usual severity, a fairway hit’s essential for a chance of making par, as a large lake that interjects between the 1st and the 18th splits the fairway short of the green. This provides for a difficult approach as the second shot is over the lake, which also guards the right side of the green and − with two bunkers on the left − it’s a well protected hole. The 19th hole

The Alpine clubhouse affords the sort of luxury that you would expect from a top class course. It’s an imposing building with good views out over the finishing hole. The hospitality is right up there with the best, which makes a visit to Alpine an all round experience rather than just a game of golf. The Chalet restaurant serves excellent fare and there's a fitness centre and swimming pool that makes Alpine more like a country club than just a golf course.
